Actual and Predicted Evapotranspiration Along with Groundwater Contribution for Wheat Crop CIGR Journal
Dahri, Shahzad Hussain; Mangrio, Munir Ahmed; Shaikh, Irfan Ahmed; Dahri, Zakir Hussain; Syed, Ain-ul-Abad; Jakhrani, Jazib Hussain; Syed, Taimoor Ali.
This experiment aimed to determine the crop evapotranspiration (ETc), groundwater input in total water used by wheat crop, and to simulate the CROPWAT model to envisage the crop evapotranspiration rate. To estimate on-field ETc and groundwater contribution the combining lysimeter technique was used. The water levels below the soil surface were kept at 1.60, 2.20, and 2.80 m and each water table depth was replicated three times. The experiment was conducted under silt loam (SL) and silty-clay loam (SCL) soil conditions. The climatic parameters and water balance components were recorded accordingly. The on-field ETc was compared with the predicted ETc by CROPWAT model. Under SL soil, the observed ETc was 442, 427, and 401 mm at the water table depth of 1.60,...

Análisis de alternativas para la eliminación de la sobreexplotación de acuíferos en el Valle de Guadalentín AgEcon
Calatrava-Leyva, Javier; Guillem, Amanda; Martinez-Granados, David.
In this paper we analyse the economic impact of alternative water management instruments that allow addressing the problem of non-renewable groundwater pumping in the aquifers of the Guadalentín Valley (southeast Spain). Their impact is assessed using a partial equilibrium mathematical programming model that maximises the farm net margin resulting from the use of the available water resources for irrigation in the area. Our results show that the buyback of groundwater pumping rights is the option with the greatest public budgetary cost and economic impact. On the contrary, the combination of an environmental tax on groundwater pumping and the substitution of groundwater by subsidised desalinised water allow eliminating aquifer overdraft in the area while...

Are Agricultural Measures for Groundwater Protection Beneficial When Compared to Purification of Polluted Groundwater? AgEcon
Hasler, Berit; Lundhede, Thomas.
The groundwater resource, the drinking water areas and the surface water quality can be protected by measures, e.g. by reductions of pesticide and nutrient applications, conversion of arable land to grasslands or forests etc. The objective of the paper is to estimate the benefits of groundwater protection by the valuation method choice experiments. This method allows for separate estimation and comparison of the different attributes connected to groundwater protection i.e. the effects on drinking water and surface water quality as compared to the benefits from cleaning and treatment of polluted drinking water to make it suitable for drinking water consumption. The results indicate that the benefits are significant, and that the willingness to pay for...

Assessing groundwater stoichiometric composition and its suitability in Northwestern Bangladesh Ciência Rural
Islam,Jahidul; Hakim,Abdul; Hanafi,Mohamed Musa; Juraimi,Abdul Shukor; Sarkar,Ratna Rani; Hossain,AKM Mosharof; Chowdhury,Indira; Ali,Jafor; Kashem,Abul.
Groundwater quality analyses included pH, EC, cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Mn2+, Fe3+ and As3+), anions (CO32-, HCO3-, NO3-, SO42-, PO43- and Cl-) and TDS of northwestern Bangladesh. The samples contained Ca2+, Mg2+ and Na+ as the dominant cations and HCO3- and Cl- were the dominant anions. Ratios of major cations and anions of water samples suggest the predominance of Ca and Mg-containing minerals over Na-containing minerals. According to TDS and SAR values, all samples were classed as 'freshwater' and 'excellent' categories. The SSP of all waters was under 'excellent' and 'good' classes. All samples were within 'soft' class regarding hardness with 'suitable' RSC. Based on As3+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Fe3+, SO42-, NO3- and Cl- all groundwater samples...

Assessment of the origin of microbiological contamination of groundwater at a rural watershed in Chile Agrociencia
Valenzuela,Mariela; Mondaca,María A.; Claret,Marcelino; Pérez,Claudio; Lagos,Bernardo; Parra,Oscar.
In a rural watershed in Chile, the scarce groundwater available represents almost the only water source both for agriculture and domestic use. This water has microbiological quality problems, which result in an agricultural and local economic development constraint. Contamination can come from punctual or diffuse sources. Characterizing the microbiological quality of groundwater allows both to identify sources from the point of view of whether they are point or non point -thus facilitating their reduction or elimination- and to determine health hazards likely to affect the population in the area under study. This study aimed to improve the state of knowledge on the microbiological quality of groundwater at a rural watershed. Forty two wells were seasonally...

Bacteria and protozoa populations in groundwater in landfill area in São Carlos, SP Rev. Microbiol.
Fusconi,Roberta; Godinho,Mirna Januária Leal.
The microbial populations of groundwaters were analyzed in a region under the influence of a landfill (piezometer L12) in the town of São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil, and in an area not influenced by the landfill (piezometer L5). Heterotrophic bacteria were counted by spread plate method and the number of protozoa was estimated by the most probable number method. There was a larger number of organisms in well L12, with a mean value of 15.76 x 104 CFU/ml for bacteria and 9.7 MPN/ml for protozoa, whereas the mean values for piezometer L5 were 2.88 x 104 CFU/ml for bacteria and 3.4 MPN/ml for protozoa. The greater abundance detected in piezometer L12 may be related to the influence of the leachate through the landfill on the microbial populations, also...

Detection of Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts in groundwater for human consumption in Itaquaquecetuba city, S. Paulo-Brazil BJM
Gamba,Rosa de Carvalho; Ciapina,Elisa Mara Prioli; Espíndola,Rodrigo S.; Pacheco,Alberto; Pellizari,Helena.
Cryptosporidium is an emergent pathogen that causes profuse diarrhea in humans. Outbreaks of human cryptosporidiosis have implicated water as a possible source of contamination. In this study the presence of Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts was investigated as well as the fecal contamination in groundwater for consumption in Itaquaquecetuba - São Paulo. Therefore, it was possible to notice that the septic tanks were located close to the wells, exposing them to risk of contamination. As a consequence of these results and observations efficient disinfecting practices and groundwater monitoring are recommended.

Development of private insurance schemes as a means to reduce water overexploitation during drought events. A case study in Campo de Cartagena (Segura River Basin, Spain) AgEcon
Perez Blanco, Carlos Dionisio; Gomez Gomez, Carlos Mario.
Water is a key input in the production of many goods and services and under certain conditions can become a critical limiting factor with significant impacts on regional development. This is the case of many agricultural European Mediterranean basins, where water deficit during drought events is partially covered by illegal abstractions, mostly from aquifers, which are tolerated by the authorities. Groundwater overexploitation for irrigation has created in these areas an unprecedented environmental catastrophe that threatens ecosystems sustainability, urban water supply and the current model of development. Market-based drought insurance systems have the potential to introduce the necessary incentives to reduce overexploitation during drought events and...

Dynamic Feedback between Surface and Groundwater Systems: Implications for Conjunctive Management AgEcon
Cobourn, Kelly M..
A key feature of hydrologically connected surface and groundwater stocks is the two-way exchange of water between the systems. Increasing water scarcity, particularly in arid environments, has spurred debate on how to coordinate management of the two resources. In this paper, I present a model that describes the dynamic feedback loop between surface and groundwater systems when economic agents withdraw water from both for use in production. I use the model to describe optimal water extraction from both stocks and to evaluate how a conjunctive management policy shifts welfare between surface and groundwater user groups. Finally, I explore the importance of accounting for two-way feedback between the two stocks, when it exists, in estimating the benefits to...

DYNAMIC-SPATIAL MANAGEMENT OF COASTAL AQUIFERS AgEcon
Kan, Iddo; Leizarowitz, Arie; Tsur, Yacov.
We analyze the management of a coastal aquifer under seawater intrusion using distributed control methods. The aquifer's state is taken as the water head elevation, which varies with time and in space since extraction, natural recharge and lateral water flows vary with time and in space. The water head, in turn, induces a temporal-spatial seawater intrusion process, which changes the volume of fresh water in the aquifer. Under reasonable conditions we show that the optimal state converges to a steady state process that is constant in time. We characterize the optimal steady state process in terms of a standard control problem (in space) and offer a tractable algorithm to solve for it.
